The one question that people most often ask is, "Why do you write inspirational fiction?"
In 2009, while hard at work on writing several contemporary secular romance novels, I attended a paranormal romance conference with a friend who writes in that genre. All was well, until we walked into the book-signing room. Although I certainly realized before-hand that paranormal romance books were popular in the industry - I was taken aback at
how popular they were. Several hundred fans and authors alike swarmed the book tables piled high with books about demons, witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and aliens -- along with table after table of full-blown erotica. Let's face it - these books had plots and characters which are light-years away from edifying or "sweet" romantic fiction! It was an eye opener.
It was at that moment, that I made the decision to "stand in the gap" and write inspirational romance stories that glorify God and celebrate the greatest love story of all time -- the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, God's only begotten son, for our sins.
There was just one problem. When I investigated the traditional inspirational publishing market - the books were too perfect. Yes, they were sweet, and edifying -- but the happily-ever-after endings were often too pat, too fake. The real Christianity I grew up with - can be really messy. People don't act like cookie cutter characters. We make wrong choices. We stumble and fall - big time. And the biggest problem for me? Automatic children. You know, where the happily-ever-after involves a post-script where the heroine hands over the EPT stick at the end of the book saying, yes, honey, the rabbit died. Praise the Lord and Pass The Diapers!
But, to be honest, God does not always answer prayer that way in real life. Having personally walked through the fire of infertility, I know that 3 out of 5 couples suffer a similar agony. Where was our story? I wanted to find books that related to my own experience - where God chooses to bless lives without the cookie-cutter plot involving children, pregnancy, or adoption. Books that showed how magnificent God's love is, despite our circumstances.
Not finding many books out there - I realized this was the ministry God intended for me all along. Child-free fiction that feeds your faith.
